Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said the latest incident outside the mall and gas station at GW Plaza, 1310 North Water Street, happened about 6:16 p.m. Saturday.
Copeland said officers were called because a 51-year-old man was slumped on the ground near a parked moped and was in a state of “extreme intoxication.” Copeland said police determined the man was incapable of looking after himself and called an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
But Copeland said the man ended up going to the Macon County Jail after he threatened paramedics and police with bodily harm. “At one point he approached a patrol officer with clenched fists threatening to batter him,” said Copeland. “He placed the officer in fear of receiving a battery ... and was placed under arrest.”
The man was booked on a preliminary charge of aggravated assault and Copeland said he made death threats to officers while being taken to jail. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the State’s Attorney’s Office.
On Sunday, Aug. 12, at the same location, police had to arrest a “highly intoxicated” 26-year-old man who was found lying on the sidewalk. He had been arrested on a charge of aggravated assault after making death threats to police and also approaching them in a threatening manner with clenched fists.
Moments before having to deal with that man, police officers had barred two women from the Quick Shop 66 at that location after they got into a “verbal altercation” with an employee while trying to buy food with a LINK card that had insufficient funds.
