Farmers hot as sugarcane rots while Komenda Sugar factory remains locked

More than two years after the opening of the new Komenda sugar factory in the Central Region, it remains shut with the State still spending about 200 million dollars annually to import sugar.

Farmers who were encouraged to cultivate sugar cane are disappointed that government has not done enough to put the factory to work. They complain hat the government is not keeping its side of the bargain after making them invest heavily in the cultivation of thousands of acres of sugarcane.

When the new Komenda Sugar factory was officially opened on May 30, 2016, many farmers in the catchment area were brimming with happiness.  They were sure sugar cane would be the new cocoa, however, the story turned sour making farmers bitter because all their sugar cane perished on their farms.
